Mountaineering – Advanced (level 3)

About the course

If you have experience and competence as a mountaineer already and want to test yourself and learn more, then this is the course for you.  This builds from your previous experience or from the “foundation level 2” mountaineering course that you did the year before.  We build from your experience, deepening your understanding of mountaineering and climbing techniques and undertake some arduous mountaineering trips including high level bivi’s.

The course is based in Valdres, Hemsedal and the Jotunheim and runs for 6 days. It would be expected that you have a good level of fitness for this course.  For this we mean the ability to undertake two arduous mountaineering days back-to-back

Course objectives:

The experienced mountaineer is a skilled, knowledgeable, efficient, wise and at times a courageous person, having to dig deep, trust and have a second nature to a solid skill base to achieve there dream goals.

We build on the following foundations:

  • Glacial travel/rescue
Alpine skills: Climbing, effective rope work, in ascent/ descent and moving together
  • Snow/Ice and mixed climbing (classic high mountain terrain)
  • Risk assessment/planning and balancing speed with safety
  • If everything goes crazy, what to do. Self-rescue

We are always open and flexible to add additional subjects as and when required. The instructors we use definitely think out of the box.

Each day we sit down together and discuss the day’s activity, find what works and what doesn’t and plan for the next days. After all, it is your course.

Combine it with other courses

This is a self-sufficient course. However, it can be combined as part of our alpine mentoring program.

Flights, train and getting there

bus station.

From the Airport, you can take the “flytoget”  which is an express train to Oslo central station.  From there it is a short walk to the bus station.  You can take the Valdres Express bus  From Oslo central to Fagernes Skysstasjon which is about 20min from my house.  The bus is comfortable, has free wifi and takes about 3 hours.  I like taking the bus to Oslo as I can look out the window and see all the waterfalls and dream about ice climbing 🙂

Nearly all participants on previous courses have travelled by the above method, and they have described it as straightforward and easy.
